Save the Internet – support Net Neutrality
Latest News: Though the bipartisan Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act passed the House Judiciary Committee, the House Rules Committee ruled against letting it be considered as an emendment to the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement (COPE) Act, a bill which specifically prohibits the FCC from enforcing Net Neutrality principles. But the fight is not over. A bill in the Senate proposed by Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) is waiting in the wings, and the conditions for Net Neutrality are more favorable in the Senate. Write your Senator and tell them to support S-2917, the Internet Freedom Preservation Act.
This battle is beyond partisanship; it's about the future of the Internet. The issue of Net Neutrality is so important that the Christian Coalition and MoveOn.org have announced a new ad to appear in the New York Times emphasizing the non-partisan nature of the issue. Have you written your legislators yet? Take a minute to visit our action center, or visit savetheinternet.com and sign the petition.
Congress needs to pass Net Neutrality to make sure the Internet stays an even playing field for everyone. If telecom companies have their way, they will be able to slow access to sites that they don't like and give preferential treatment to others. Individuals and small businesses may be unable to afford the fees telecom companies want to charge for some content, and only major corporations will be able to give you access to the fastest content.
Worse yet, telecom companies are expanding into businesses like music downloading and video delivery. They could decide that they want their service to be faster than the competition's, and then everyone loses out.
Write your legislators today, and sign the petition at savetheinternet.com. You can even add the Save the Internet coalition as a Myspace friend. If you're an eBay user, find out what eBay is doing to support Net Neutrality by visiting ebaymainstreet.com.
