The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership
Are YOU a college student interested in politics?
Do you plan to run for political office one day?
Do you want to have a better understanding of state and local government?
If YOU answered YES to any of these questions, apply for the
Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership’s
College Leaders Program
May 31st through June 28th, 2008
The College Leaders Program gives students who are dedicated to community and political engagement a chance to receive in-depth classroom instruction and hands-on training in practical politics. Our students meet the people who affect policy, including elected officials, members of the news media, and the state’s most distinguished business and non-profit leaders. In past years, our classes have met with Governors Tim Kaine, Mark Warner, and George Allen, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, Attorney General Bob McDonnell, as well as Senators, Congressmen and members of the General Assembly.
In the College Leaders Program students learn the tools of modern advocacy:
- Researching and writing legislation
- Writing an op-ed
- Appearing on television
- Briefing a legislator
- Organizing a grassroots campaign
- Fundraising
- Speech writing and delivery
- Campaign strategy
Students can receive six undergraduate credits at the University of Virginia for their participation in the program. Please see the attached flier for more information, or for an online application visit the Sorensen Institute web site at www.sorenseninstitute.org
Financial aid is available; potential applicants are strongly urged to apply regardless of financial concerns. The application deadline is March 2nd, 2008. If you have any questions regarding the College Leaders Program, please contact Chris Wrobel, Assistant to the Director of Youth Programs, at (434) 243-2470 or christopher.wrobel@virginia.edu
I participated in the CLP last summer and it was an amazing experience! I now feel more connected to Virginia politics and have a greater appreciation for lobbying and the difference I can make. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!
