Storming the Doors

If you live in Northern Virginia you probably spent the previous Saturday enjoying the first snow of the season from the comfort of your living room. In the 37th state senate district, Trent Armitage and I ventured out into the snow to wake up our Fairfax Democrats and knock doors for the special election coming up January 12 to fill Ken Cuccinelli's vacant senate seat. Some brave volunteers joined us as well – including an intrepid group of George Mason University Young Dems!

We got some astonished looks, and a lot of folks asking what we were doing walking around in a snowstorm – and the answer? We're out on the doors – despite snow, rain, sleet, and horrendous NoVa traffic – to send a great Democrat to the state senate in Dave Marsden, and to start our Democratic comeback January 12th. November was rough, and we're not going to let it happen again.

The two of us have hit 2,740 doors since December 1, with a goal of 18,000 doors before early January – can you spare a few hours from your busy holiday schedule to help us hit that goal? A Democratic win is the best gift you can give yourself!

A few more notes about the race:

• This election could decide control of the State Senate. Democrats at the moment have a one-vote majority in the senate, and as Majority Leader Dick Saslaw noted at our campaign kick-off, he can't even afford to have any Democrats out sick with that wafer-thin majority. We need to expand our majority. Let's make sure we have a necessary check on Bob McDonnell and the House of Delegates, instead of one-party rule in Richmond.

• Dave will fight for public school funding and a sensible transportation solution, and stand strong on core Democratic issues like a woman's right to choose and environmental protection.

• Help us make sure that we don’t elect a Rush Limbaugh Republican who's out-Cuccinelli'd Ken Cuccinelli. The Republican candidate, Steve Hunt, was censured by the school board for sending a letter to all Fairfax County principals telling them to invite speakers with “an ex-gay perspective,” to warn students about the “very destructive homosexual lifestyle.” Virginia cannot afford to have this kind of intolerance in our legislature.

So what can you do? Come out with your chapter, adopt a precinct in the 37th district, and get our voters mobilized. Every door knocked and every call made will make a difference.
