October 13, 2009

Alexandria - During the "Hope and Opportunity Tour," Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman Richard Cranwell and other local Deeds supporters will demonstrate that the choice is clear for small business owners and families in rural Virginia who have been hit hard by the economic downturn. Creigh Deeds is the only candidate in this race who understands the issues that Virginia communities face and has an honest plan to solve them.

The tour kicked off Monday in Winchester, Harrisonburg and Staunton and continues today in Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville. Deeds for Virginia supporters will complete the ‘Hope and Opportunity Tour’ on Wednesday, October 14th, in Southwest Virginia with stops in Bluefield, Wytheville, Marion and Bristol.

*See below for a roundup of coverage!*

Waynesboro News Virginian (Bob Stuart) “Leading Dems campaign for Deeds”: Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Richard Cranwell and some prominent Shenandoah Valley Democrats came to Staunton on Monday to tout Democratic gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds’ job creation and support for rural areas. Cranwell was joined by Rockingham County Democratic Committee Chairman Lowell Fulk and Staunton City Councilman Bruce Elder at Carded Graphics, a Staunton industry that received an infusion of state money to install modern equipment. Monday was the start of a three-day “Hope and Opportunity Tour’’ for the Deeds campaign through rural Virginia. Calling next month’s election as “critical an election as folks in Virginia have seen in a long, long time,’’ Cranwell said Deeds was the chief architect of legislation for the Governor’s Opportunity Fund, an economic development fund to recruit industry to Virginia. “Bob McDonnell has voted against the Governor’s Opportunity Fund that has created or saved 79,000 jobs in Virginia,’’ Cranwell said of the Republican gubernatorial nominee. And Cranwell said Deeds supported former Gov. Mark Warner’s $1.5-billion investment in public education in 2004 while describing McDonnell as “the Dr. No who voted against it.” “Do you want a leader like Mark Warner or Tim Kaine or someone like Jim Gilmore who will run us in the ditch again?’’ Cranwell asked a crowd of about 30 at Carded Graphics.

Staunton News Leader (Trevor Brown) “Dems kick off Deeds tour”: The chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia touted R. Creigh Deeds' plan to create jobs while he labeled rival gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell as "Dr. No." "The choice is do you want a leader like Mark Warner or Tim Kaine that knows how to move this state forward?" said Richard Cranwell, chair of the state's Democratic party, in reference to Deeds. "Or do you want someone like Jim Gilmore who is going to run this state back into the ditch?" Cranwell joined Rockingham County Democratic Chairman Lowell Fulk and Staunton City Councilman Bruce Elder Monday for the kickoff of the Deeds' campaign's "Hope and Opportunity Tour." The event, held at Carded Graphics in Staunton, allowed supporters to demonstrate why they think Deeds is the best candidate to bring jobs and economic growth to the area. "Creigh Deeds has been with us every year," said Fulk, who noted the area lacks Democratic representatives in the General Assembly. "Mr. Deeds deserves our support."

Northern Virginia Daily (Garren Shipley) “Deeds kicks off tour of western Virginia with former Sen. Potts in Winchester”: There's only one candidate for governor with a real plan for transportation, and it isn't Republican Bob McDonnell, retired state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr., R-Winchester, said Monday.Potts joined Richard Cranwell, chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, in Winchester on the first stop of Deeds' "hope and opportunity" tour of western Virginia… "I can assure that only one candidate has a transportation package, and that's Sen. Deeds, because he has the courage to make the tough decisions that'll fix the transportation system," he said. The solution to the problem is money, Potts said, and McDonnell's plan brings none to the table. "Anyone that will tell you that we can fix the transportation problem in Virginia without a long-term, sustainable, reliable revenue source just doesn't know what he's talking about," Potts said. Potts spoke on a Piccadilly Street sidewalk, well within earshot of the city's ongoing major utility upgrade project. "You can hear within a block here the pleasant sounds of jobs, jobs, jobs. The greatest single provider of jobs in Virginia could be fixing our transportation system," Potts said.

Staunton News Leader (Trevor Brown) “Democratic officials to campaign for Deeds today in Staunton”: The chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia and other party officials will host a campaign event today in Staunton as part of gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds' "Hope and Opportunity Tour." “This tour will demonstrate that the choice is clear for the small business owners and families in rural Virginia who have been hit hard by the economic downturn," reads a statement from Deeds' campaign. "Creigh Deeds is the only candidate in this race who understands the issues that Virginia communities face and has an honest plan to solve them."

WHSV ABC 3 “Deeds' Representatives Stump in the Valley”: Representatives for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds' campaign are making a run through the Valley Monday…Democratic Party Chair Richard Cranwell spoke about Deeds' plan to strengthen Virginia's economy. Retired Republican Sen. Russ Potts supports Deeds and says he's not concerned about polls showing Republican Bob McDonnell leading the race."This race is far from over," says Potts. "Eight points is nothing. Remember when you take four away and you give four to the other guy then you're in a dead heat here, because what's the margin of error, four."

NBC 29 (Matt Talhelm) “Deeds Campaign Kicks Off Tour”: Creigh Deeds' campaign kicked off a tour Monday through parts of the commonwealth hardest hit by job losses. The democrat's supporters rallied around his economic development plan inside Staunton’s Carded Graphics Monday afternoon. That company expanded thanks to a six-figure incentive package from the city and state. Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Dick Cranwell pushed Deed's plan to give tax credits for companies that create at least one new job.
