Today Liberty University in Lynchburg shut down their chapter of the Young Democrats, citing the pro-choice, pro-equality stances of the national Democratic Party. Students continuing to use Liberty facilities and its name are subject to formal reprimands from the school. These reprimands can lead to expulsion.
No, you read that right. Liberty University is threatening students who formally organize on their campus as Young Democrats with expulsion. Disgusted? Sign the petition conveniently located on the right of your screen.
A few reflections below the "fold."
Never mind that there are millions of Christians who are Democrats in this country. Never mind that many students who attend Liberty receive federal (tax-payer funded) grants and loans. At Liberty University, Democrats are not allowed to organize.
According to the Lynchburg News and Advance, Gov. Tim Kaine along wit gubernatorial candidates Sen. Creigh Deeds and Terry McAuliffe have called on the LU administration to reconsider their stance.
No one said it better than LU's administration-overseen newspaper April 7 after the LUYDs won our up and coming club award at Convention:
"While many members of the chapter uphold Christian values, such as pro-life stances, they also think that economic issues such as health care and the welfare of needy people must not be left on the back burner. Diaz hopes that LUCD’s mission on the campus will inspire students to take action in Lynchburg and their own local communities in an effort to better reflect Christ in the world.
The College Republicans Public Relations Director Melinda Zosh sees this organization as a great opportunity for politically engaged students to gain experience in an open forum of discussion on the issues."
